We strongly believe in the value and importance of an environment where all members of the AWS community and event participants feel welcome and safe. This Code of Conduct explains the type of behavior we expect from AWS community members and event participants. The terms of this Code of Conduct are non-negotiable. We will not tolerate behaviors contrary to this Code in order to ensure a professional and positive experience in learning, collaboration, or leisure.

Why a code of conduct?

It's about knowing what is expected in the atmosphere of any event organized within the AWS community:

  • It ensures more people know they are welcome
  • It avoids ambiguities
  • It builds a climate of trust, where if someone wants to report an incident, they will know we won’t start by questioning them (victim blaming).

Scope

We expect all participants in both in-person and online events (including AWS employees, attendees, vendors, sponsors, speakers, volunteers, and guests) to respect the principles of this Code of Conduct. It also applies to public spaces where a person is representing the community. This Code of Conduct covers the main event and all related events (social or otherwise). Examples of the latter include using the official email account, posts through official social networks, or presentations with designated persons in online or in-person events.

Our Standards

  • You should demonstrate empathy and kindness towards others.
  • Respect different opinions, viewpoints, and experiences
  • Give and accept appropriately constructive criticism
  • You will behave in a way that creates a safe and conducive environment for all event participants.
  • You will not engage in disruptive speech or behavior, nor interfere in any other way with the event or other people's participation in it.
  • You will not engage in any form of harassing, offensive, humiliating, discriminatory, or threatening speech, joke, or behavior, including (but not limited to) in relation to race, gender, gender identity and expression, national origin, religion, disability, marital status, age, sexual orientation, military or veteran status, or any other protected category.
  • Accept responsibility and apologize to those affected by our mistakes, learning from the experience
  • Focus on what is best not only for ourselves as individuals but for the community as a whole
  • Use inclusive language and accommodate a diverse audience
  • Pay special attention to newcomers to the community
  • Introduce yourself with your pronouns and ask another person theirs to ensure clear and unbiased communication
  • Comply with the instructions of the event staff and the venue
  • Comply with all applicable laws.

Examples of unacceptable behavior:

  • The use of sexualized language or imagery, and sexual attention or advances of any kind Derogatory, trolling, insulting, or derogatory comments, and personal or political attacks Racist, sexist, or exclusionary jokes
  • Harassment in public or private
  • Publishing other people's private information, such as physical or email addresses, without their explicit permission
  • You will not engage in any form of harassing, offensive, humiliating, discriminatory, or threatening speech, joke, or behavior, including (but not limited to) in relation to race, gender, gender identity and expression, national origin, religion, disability, marital status, age, sexual orientation, military or veteran status, or any other protected category.
  • Other behaviors that may be reasonably considered inappropriate in a professional setting

Harassment includes offensive comments related to gender, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance, body size, race, or religion, pornography in public spaces, deliberate intimidation, stalking, following, harassing photography or recording, sustained disruption of talks or other events, inappropriate physical contact, and unwelcome sexual attention.

Consequences

If we consider that you are not complying with this Code of Conduct, we may deny you entry or require you to leave all event venues. All decisions are at our sole discretion. We will involve local law enforcement if we deem it appropriate. If we deny you entry or require you to leave the venue, you will not be entitled to any refund of any fees you have paid us in connection with the event or related events. Failure to comply with this Code of Conduct may result in disqualification from participating in future events.

Reporting and contact information

Cases of abusive, harassing, or otherwise unacceptable behavior may be reported to the community administrators responsible for enforcement, both by the victim and by any other event attendee:

  • If it is an in-person event, contact the event organizers directly. They will likely have published a specific event code of conduct with instructions on who to approach; they will provide a safe space to assist you.
  • If it is an online space, contact the moderators of that space.
  • On Slack, contact the event organizers. For other spaces or alternatively, contact the AWS community organizers.
  • All community administrators are obligated to respect the privacy and safety of those who report incidents.
